CIRCUIT COURT IN SESSION AT HERMANN THIS WEEK Circuit Court convened in Monday and will be in session (Friday). Of the sixteen cases continued, one dismissed, one passed, one tried by jury on be heard. RECEIVES PROMOTION Harold A. Wehrend, USN, of Owensville Route 1 has been advanced commissaryman, third class, while serving with U. S.

Fleet Activities, Yokosuka, Japan. Wehrend, who entered the Naval service Feb. 21, 1949, received his recruit training at the U. S. Naval Training Center, San Diego, Calif.

Before entering the Navy, he was graduated from Owensville High School. To Re-Surface County Highways The State Highway Department is preparing to make extensive repairs on some of the roads in Gasconade County which were severely damaged during the past winter. Preparations are under way to re-surface scarified partions of Route and between Hermann and Gasconade and also on Route 19 from Drake south to the Crawford County line. The work will be done in such a manner to cause the traveling public as little inconvenience as possible, and proper warning and caution signs will be displayed at the limits of the work. Motorists are cautioned to travel carefully and keep out of the fresh oil on the sections where repairs are being made.

The Highway Department has already let the contract for some of the work on Route 19 north of Highway 50 and also for the work between Owensville and Cuba. The work will get under way the latter part of May. SURPRISE BIRTHDAY DINNER A surprise birthday dinner was given at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Dick Uffmann and daughter, Linda Sue, Sunday, May 13th, in honor of Mr.

Uffmann's birthday anniversary. Those present were Mr. and Mrs. Henry Uffmann, Fred Krause, Mr. and Mrs.

Ben Krause and family, Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Moss, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Krause and family, Mr.

and Mrs. Fred Krause, and family, Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Wotipka and family, Sanford Wenkel, H.

C. Wienecke, Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Nicks, Mr. and Mrs.

Virgil Paasch, Rev. Homer Steinhardt and children, all of Owensville; Mr. and Mrs. Roy Wheeler of Gerald; Mrs. Eliza Buesch, Mr.

Louis. A bountiful dinner was spread and the afternoon was spent visiting. Mr. Uffmann received many useful gifts. AT FAIRCHILD AIR BASE Sgt.

Ervin W. Wiese, who recently was recalled to active duty in the Air Force, is stationed at Fairchild Air Force Base, Washington, where he is serving with the Headquarters Squadron of the 92nd Bomb Wing. Historical Society XX from 'Round About NEWS Cuba News-Review- Robbery and destruction of property hit the IGA Central Super Market last Friday night when thieves broke into the store and made their escape with money and merchandise with a value of $589.25. Last Friday's break-in was the second in a little over a year. In March of last year, robbers broke in and stole over $400.

The burglars gained entrance by boring through at the exact spot of the lock of the door in the recently completed wareroom of the store, after wrecking a cash register as well as spreading meat from the cooler over the floor of the meat department, made off with 300 cartons of cigarettes and $138 in silver which was in the cash registers. The exact time of the robbery has not been established but was committed some time between 10:30 p. m. Friday and 7:00 a. m.

Saturday. Ozark News (St. Clair)--A fire which started in the attic of the A. L. Williams building at Lone Dell, on Monday afternoon of this week about 4:30, destroyed a part of the dwelling or apartment upstairs over his general store.

The St. Clair Volunteer Fire Department was the first to arrive at the scene and was followed by the Department of Cedar Hill, Mo. The boys from St. Clair laid a hose from the Little Meramec River to the Williams Building and succeeded in putting out the fire before it reached the first floor. The front of the upstairs and its were completely destroyed but the contents of the store was only damaged by water and smoke.

The damage is estimated at between four and five thousand dollars. Warrenton Banner--A 16-yearold youth was instantly killed Friday morning at 5:15 when a stolen auto which he was driving crashed into a trailer truck a mile west of Warrenton on Highway 40. The young man carried no identification and it was Sunday before the body was definitely identified as being William Henry Rhine of Fayetteville, Arkansas. The identifications was made by L. W.

Nowlin, a driver for the Watson Mortuary of Fayetteville, Arkansas, who knew the young man when he lived with his grandfather at Fayetteville, while his parents live at Newport, Oregon. According to reports young Rhine had escaped from the Industrial School for Boys at Pine Bluff, Arkansas, where he was serving time for car theft. The car driven by Rhine, a 1946 Dodge, was stolen from George Comely of East St. Louis. It was a complete wreck.

The Illinois license plates were found in the rear of the machine and had been replaced with a Missouri license taken from a car owned by Lonnie Cunningham of Wentzville. St. Clair Chronicle--Three Wisconsin youths, who stole a car in Milwaukee because they "wanted to go are being held for Wisconsin authorities in the Franklin County jail at Union. The youths were arrested Tuesday afternoon on Highway 66, one mile west of the overpass near St. Clair, by Trooper A.

S. Whitmer of the State Patrol who stopped them for investigation. The youths, who gave their names as Dennis John Wilson, 18; Johnny J. Butler, 17, and Robert Nicholas Behling, 17, all of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, admitted stealing the 1948 Mercury Cabriolet in (Continued on Page 4.) Howard Brandt Last Rites Saturday For Charles Roberson Processional- Accordian Piano Solo Presentation Song-" Funeral services for Charles Roberson, who died suddenly at his home in Canaan last Wednesday, May 9, were held Saturday afternoon, May 12, at Gottenstroeter Funeral Home in Owensville with interment in Liberty Cemetery near Canaan. Rev. Homer Steinhardt conducted the services. He had reached the age of 73 years, 3 months and 9 days. Charles Riley Roberson was born at Drake on January 30, 1878, a son of the late Clayton and Nancy Ann (Warden) Roberson.

He was united in marriage to Miss Francis Orudot, and to this union one son was born. The marriage ended in divorce. He is survived by one son, Riley Roberson, of Hermann; and two brothers--Sam C. Roberson of Canaan and Gale C. Roberson of Union.

Two sisters, Mrs. Emma Reed and Mrs. Chlora Moeckli, preceded him in death. Mr. Roberson was well-known in the community.

He operated a barber shop in Canaan for many years and played the violin in the Roberson Brothers String Band, a popular dance band about forty years ago. FORMER RESIDENT DIES IN WASHINGTON Mrs. Geo. Shelton, former Owensville resident, passed away in St. Francis Hospital in Washington last Sunday afternoon, May 13.

Mrs. Shelton suffered a stroke the previous Friday and another stroke Sunday. Mrs. Shelton was the mother of Mrs. Robt.

Gross of Bland and Eugene Shelton of St. James. Funeral services were conducted at 9 a. m. Wednesday, May 16, at St.

Francis Borgia Church in Washington. Crawford regular May Term at Hermann today (Thursday) and tomorrow listed on the docket, nine were settled out of court, two were Wednesday, and two cases yet to I I Temple Dedication Well Attended Between 500 and 600 persons were in Owensville last Saturday, May 1 12, to attend the dedication services for the new Masonic Temple. The dedication was a homecoming for many who attended. people being present from Illinois, St. Louis, Kansas City, and other points. The Temple was filled to capacity for the dedication ceremony, which was in charge of Morris E.

Ewing, Past Grand Master of the Masonic Lodge of Missouri. Mr. Ewing was assisted by Wm. Juergens of Sullivan, District Grand Lecturer. Preceding the, dedication ceremony, a parade two blocks long, led by the High School Band, marched from the old Hall to the new Temple.

Following the ceremony, addresses were made by Past Deputy Grand Lecturer R. A. Breuer of Hermann and Mr. Ewing. A short program was given by the order of the Eastern Star.

Serving of the banquet dinner began at 5:30 with the Music Department of the High School, under the direction of Don Neuhart, entertaining part of the crowd while others were partaking of the delicious banquet dinner served by the ladies of the Order of the Eastern Star. The large dining hall accommodated nearly 200 people at a time, about 550 dinners being served throughout the evening. Ajax Safety Dinner Held Last Thursday The annual safety meeting of the Owensville Ajax Pump Station was held last Thursday evening, May 10, in the dining room of the new Masonic Temple on E. Lincoln Ave. At 6:30 p.

m. a turkey dinner was served by the Past Matrons Club of Owensville Chapter No. 414, Order of the Eastern Star. During the meeting Chief Engineer R. J.

Bishop of Owensville Station presided. After speeches by several of the guests Supt. Nonweiler presented Mr. Bishop with a framed certificate for 194,026 man hours without a lost time accident. Mr.

Ray Garver took moving pictures throughout the evening. Special entertainment was provided by a magician, R. Crivello, and assistant of Alton, Illinois. The remainder of the evening was spent visiting and watching movies. Guests were Mr.

and Mrs. Gilbert Bartel, formerly Owensville, and granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. Winsel Kosark of Bland, was one of three girls from the St. Louis area to win an award from the Scholarship Committee of the College Club of St.

Louis. This committee selects outstanding seniors in local high schools annually for the Miss Bartel, 17, has attended Clayton High School, where she was elected to the National Honor Society each year, and will enter Washington University. The Bar. tels now live in Creve Coeur, near St. Louis.

High School and Eighth Grade Graduation Eighth Commencement exercises for forty-nine members of the Class of '51, Owensville High School, and Graduation Exercises for eighty 8th grade graduates of District R-2 Public Schools, will get under way this weekend with the 8th grade class receiving diplomas tomorrow (Friday) night at the High School Auditorium. H. Newberry were passed. AWARDED SCHOLARSHIP TO WESTMINSTER COLLEGE Miss Mildred Linhardt Weds Edwin Heidbrink Miss Mildred Linhardt, daughter of Mr. John Linhardt, and Mr. Edwin Heidbrink, son of Mr.

and Mrs. Henry Heidbrink of Rosebud, were united in marriage in the Immanuel Lutheran Church at Rosebud on Saturday, May 12. Rev. Carl F. Schmidt performed the double ring ceremony in the presence of the immediate families.

Mrs. Arnold Heidbrink, sister of the bride, was her only attendant. Mr. Arnold Heidbrink, brother of the groom, served as best man. The bride wore a white suit and had white accessories.

She wore a double strand of pearls, a gift of the groom. Her corsage was of white carnations. Mrs. Arnold Heidbrink wore a rose suit and she also had white accessories. She wore a corsage of yellow carnations.

The groom and best man wore light grey suits. Both wore a white bouttonaire. Mr. Elmer Glawe played the organ during the ceremony. The church was decorated with bridal wreaths and ferns.

A supper was served to the immediate families in the beautifully decorated school basem*nt. After the supper a large group of friends and relatives gathered at the John Linhardt home to give them a charivari. Mrs. Heidbrink is employed by the Deb Shoe Co. Mr.

Heidbrink is employed by the Rousset Bros. Clay Co. They will make their home in Rosebud. HEADS VFW POST IN NEWBURGH, N. Y.

E. H. Linenbroeker, son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Linenbroeker of Rosebud, was recently elected Commander of John T.

Kenny Post No. 973, Veterans of Foreign Wars of Newburgh, New York. Mr. Linenbroker is a veteran of World War II and served in the Air Force for four years. He served overseas in India and China.

Mr. Linenbroeker lives in Newburgh with his wife and two children, and is chief clerk of maintenance and property of the Transportation Office at the United States Military Academy at West Point. LOSE BABY DAUGHTER A daughter was born to Mr. and Mrs. Earl Lough at St.

Francis Hospital in Washington last Wednesday, May 9, but lived only 36 hours. She was given the name Ricky Dean. Mrs. Lough is the former Mary Ann Vandegriffe. Private funeral services were held at the Gottenstroeter Funeral home Friday, May 11, with interment in the City Cemetery.

Rev. Sewell conducted the services. Jerry Berger, son of Mr. and Mrs. Alfred F.

Berger, 311 South Second Street, Owensville, has been awarded a Westminster College Honor Scholarship for the academic year of 1951-52, it was announced this week by President William W. Hall, Jr. Berger is a senior at Owensville High School and plans to study mathematics or chemistry at Westminster College. He has been active in high school publications having worked on both the paper and the yearbook. A trumpet player for five years, he is a member of the "Thirsty a five-piece vaudeville band organized by he and his school mates that plays for civic functions.

BRIDAL SHOWER A surprise bridal shower was given last Wednesday at the Henry Baur home in Rosebud in honor of Miss Mildred Linhardt, who became the bride of Edwin Heidbrink on May 12. Mrs. Art. Heidbrink and Mrs. Henry Baur were hostesses.

About fifty guests were present. A lunch of cake and ice cream was served. Mrs. Heidbrink received many beautiful gifts. BIRTHDAY PARTY A crowd of about 70 relatives and friends gathered last Saturday evening at the home of Mr.

and Mrs. Fred E. Krause, to help their daughters, Mrs. Irmagjean Paasch of Owensville and Mrs. Dorothy Turnure of St.

Louis celebrate their birthday anniversaries. Refreshments of sandwiches, coffee and soda were served by their mother. Many pretty and useful presents were received.
