"Doc, A.J., Daddy and Mac" McNeil, July 3, 1996 in Houston, TX, devoted husband and friend of 45 years to Ella Edith Holmes McNeil; dedicated father of Charles Kenneth of Memphis Tn, Adrian Jonjerome of Laredo, TX, Needha M.B. Queen of Oklahoma City; son of Charlie and Amelia McNeil; grandfather of Nichole Crystell Boutte' and Adriana Ella McNeil; father-in-law of Dalia C. McNeil of Laredo and James E. Queen III; numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. He was an inspiration to many and will be greatly missed by relatives and a worldwide host of friends.He graduated from Lanier High School in Jackson, MS, then attended Tougaloo College where his studies were interrupted by military service in the U.S.

Army during WWII. His enlistment on Sept. 10, 1942 was followed by rapid advancement and an Honorable Discharge as WO(JG) on Oct. 20, 1944. Alvin then attended Tennessee State University where he became a member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc.

and received his B.A. (with Honors) in History and Spanish in 1947. He later earned his M.A. in Public Administration from the University of Denver in 1960. Subsequent academic studies were completed at Morgan STate College, American Council of Education, Harvard Unversity, Howard University and Texas Southern University.

His career as an includes Assistant Principal of Childress Vocational High School (Arkansas), 1947-50; Head at Mississippi Vocational College, 1951-58; Department Head at Gambling State College, 1958-68; Dean, College of Arts and Sciences at Prairie View University, 1968-70; and Vice President for Academic Affairs Prairie View University, 1970-71. During his association with Texas Southern University, "Doc" served as Professor of Education and Coordinator of Graduate Programs, 1971-72; Associate Dean, College of Education, 1975-81; Professor and Chairman, Department of Administration and Higher Education, 1981-88; and Professor Emeritus from 1988 until his death. "Mac" was actively dedicated to community service as City Councilman for the Town of Grambling in Louisiana from 1965-69; Chairman of the National Pan-Hellenic Councie, 1962-66; Member of the Board of Directors Southwest Center for Urban Research, 1974-78; Member of the Board of Directors Neighborhood Centers, 1983- present; Chairman for the Black Caucus of American Association of Higher Education, 1980-84; Chairman Emeritus-Black Caucus of American Association of Higher Education, 1984-present. He also served on numerous reaffirmation teams of Southern Association of College and Universities and National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education. "Doc" has been listed in Who's Who in American Colleges and Universities, Who's Who in the South and Southwest, Dictionary of International Biography and Who's Who in Black America.

He also held memberships in numerous and fraternal organizations including Lambda Eta Sigma, Sigma Delta Phi, Kappa Delta Pi, Phi Delta Kappa, Alpha Kappa Delta, Alpha Mu Gamma, Shriners, and Prince Hall Masons-32nd Degree. The numerous awards and honors "Doc" received throughout his lifetime include the Meritorious Services Award as Alderman presented by the town of Grambling, LA (1968); the Wheeler Avenue Baptist Church Outstanding Services Award (1977) and Christian Services Award (1983); Meritorious Award presented by the School of Education, Texas Southern University (1982); Outstanding Services to Higher Education Award (1985); and having a star registered in his name with the International Star Registry in Switzerland by his brothers of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. (1966). "Mac's" ardent service to Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. began with his initiation on May 12, 9146.

From there he held a number of offices including President of Zeta Alpha Chapter (1946), Regional Director of the South Centeral Region (1947-48), two years as Southern Region Regional Director, and four years as the National Director of Education. He was a First National Vice President, and the only National President to serve three consecutive 18 month terms (July 1965 to December 1970). Other offices included Treasurer and Regional Director of the Gulf Coast. Region. "Mac" was an active member of the Distinguished Service Chapter until his passing.

Early and continuous dedication of his service to our Lord was expressed from the time of his baptism in the Pearl River into the family of Pearly Grove MBC (Jackson, MS), then as Deacon at New Rocky Valley BC (Grambling, LA), and later Wheeler Avenue Baptist Church (Houston, TX) where he served as Deacon, member of the Count Team and Bell Choir, and as needed until the end.
