native Austria for California He described how it was in 1938 when people lined the streets cheering as the Nazis marched into Vienna He remembered watching other Jewish medical students from the University of Vienna being thrown from the balconies Mr Nussenbaum wanted people to know what he had been through He also had a lesson to teach had his life all worked out then it was all ripped away from said his daughter Evelyn Nussenbaum wanted us to know that life is fragile that huge and horrible things can happen to people in a Mr Nussenbaum would spend most of his life as an educator teaching at California State University Sacramento the UC Davis Medical Center and University of California San Francisco The long-time Sacramento resident died Aug 26 after a long series of illnesses He was 82 After leaving Austria Mr Nussenbaum went first to Italy then Switzerland When Swiss immigration officials tried to force him back to Austria he was able to contact an uncle in America who vouched for him and allowed him to gain a visa Mr Nussenbaum made his way to California with the idea of studying agriculture at UC Davis Heplanned to then go to Israel and become a farmer There was only one unanticipated problem hated dirt He loved books so he gave up on that his daughter said Mr Nussenbaum transferred to UC Berkeley to study chemistry He earned his degree a degree in food chemistry and a doctorate in comparative biochemistry He made his way through school by planting grass at the Golden Gate race track hauling sugar sacks at the factory and washing dishes in Berkeley fraternities Midway through his education he served in the US Army from 1945 to 1947 earning the rank of sergeant He first saw his future wife Celia Womark a German Jewish refugee in a picture contained in a wedding album He asked for an introduction and the pair went on a date was most hesitant and indifferent at first because 1 sure that he was a man of learning That was my first Celia Nussenbaum remembered found that he not only was a person of learning but that he had a true love of learning never met anyone before who was so intelligent and so unusually The pair married in 1951 and soon settled in Sacramento He began teaching at CSUS in 1952 and would continue at the school for 38 years including a stint as department chairman Through the years he also taught laboratory science at UC Davis Medical Center and founded a laboratory technology program at UC San Francisco Medical School He would write a textbook and do some early research in differentiating so-called and cholesterol Evelyn Nussenbaum said Mr Nussenbaum won many teaching awards including the Contribution in Education from the National Association of Clinical Chemistry Although a challenging teacher Mr Nussenbaum had the ability to take a difficult concept and put it in plain vivid English Teaching was his passion his family said "He had office hours not just in the office but at home we always had students in the said Evelyn Nussenbaum a former New York Post columnist now a freelance writer in Berkeley He kept in contact with several former students and since his death the family has received several calls and letters fondly recalling his effect on their lives One of those students is Rita Te-zanos-Pinto who studied under Nussenbaum at CSUS was the true meaning of a said Tezanos-Pinto who kept in touch with him for 20 years was very understanding he loved his job Biochemistry is not so easy to understand and what was difficult he made His impressive grasp of his subject is one of the things that touched students most letter really summed it Celia Nussenbaum said student wrote: knew everything about chemistry And what he know he had written on a 3 5 card in his shirt Mr Nussenbaum
